Ingredients in Baked Pork Ribs
Here’s what you need to make Baked Pork Ribs:
- Pork ribs (1 - 1.5 kg): Use fresh, meaty ribs for the best flavor and tenderness. Baby back ribs or spare ribs work perfectly for this recipe.
- Sugar (6 tbsp): Adds sweetness to balance the savory and spicy flavors, helping to caramelize the ribs beautifully in the oven.
- Paprika (1 tbsp): Provides a smoky, slightly sweet depth to the spice rub. You can use smoked paprika for an extra layer of flavor.
- Dried garlic (1 tbsp): Enhances the spice rub with a bold, aromatic garlic kick. Garlic powder can also be used as a substitute.
- Chili (to taste): Adds a touch of heat. Adjust the amount based on your spice tolerance—mild, medium, or extra spicy.
- Salt (to taste): Brings out the natural flavors of the pork and balances the seasoning mix.
- Ketchup (5 tbsp): Use a high-quality ketchup (like Heinz) to create a tangy, slightly sweet base for the sauce.
- Honey (2 tbsp): Adds natural sweetness and helps the sauce achieve its sticky, glossy finish.
- Garlic (3 - 4 cloves): Freshly chopped garlic boosts the sauce with robust, savory flavor.
- Soy sauce (5 tbsp): Adds a salty, umami-rich depth to the glaze, enhancing the overall taste of the ribs.
- Aluminum foil: Essential for covering the ribs while baking to lock in moisture and ensure they cook evenly.
For the Carrot Garnish (Optional):
- Carrots (4): Fresh carrots bring a natural sweetness that pairs beautifully with the savory ribs.
- Olive oil: Used to coat the carrots, helping them roast to tender perfection.
- Dried garlic: Adds flavor to the carrots, creating a fragrant, savory side dish.
- Lemon juice: Provides a refreshing citrusy tang that balances the richness of the butter and garlic.
- Melted butter: Adds richness to the parsley mixture, making the carrots even more indulgent.
- Parsley: Freshly chopped parsley brings a bright, herbal touch to the garnish.
- Garlic (crushed): Intensifies the flavors in the parsley mixture, adding depth to the carrots.
- Sesame seeds: Sprinkled on top for a nutty crunch and a decorative finish.
This ingredient list ensures that every element of the dish—ribs and carrots alike—is bursting with flavor and texture!
How to make Baked Pork Ribs
Making these sweet and savory oven-baked ribs is simple and rewarding. You’ll mix a flavorful spice rub, bake the ribs until tender, then coat them in a rich, sticky sauce. As they cook, the glaze caramelizes beautifully. Add the optional roasted carrot garnish for a fresh, zesty touch. The whole process is easy and fills your kitchen with amazing smells!
1. Prepare the Ribs
Combine the sugar, paprika, dried garlic, chili, and salt in a bowl and rub this spice mixture generously over both sides of the pork ribs, massaging it into the meat for maximum flavor. Cover and let the ribs marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours, or ideally overnight, to allow the flavors to fully develop.
2. Bake the Ribs
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the marinated ribs on a baking tray and cover them tightly with aluminum foil to retain moisture while cooking. Bake the ribs in the oven for at least 1.5 hours.
3. Prepare the Sauce
While the ribs are baking, combine ketchup, soy sauce, freshly chopped garlic, and honey in a small pot. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it becomes slightly thickened and well blended.
4. Brush and Bake Again
Remove the ribs from the oven and carefully uncover them. Brush one side of the ribs generously with the prepared sauce, then return them to the oven, uncovered, and continue baking. Flip the ribs, brush the other side with sauce, and bake until both sides are caramelized and fully cooked.
5. Prepare the Carrots (Optional)
Slice the carrots diagonally into rounds, then cut each piece in half for bite-sized pieces. Toss the carrots with olive oil and dried garlic, ensuring they are evenly coated. Spread the carrots on a baking tray and bake in the oven at 180°C (350°F) until tender and lightly roasted.
6. Make the Parsley Mixture
While the carrots are roasting, finely chop fresh parsley and mix it with melted butter, crushed garlic, and a splash of lemon juice. Once the carrots are finished, drizzle the parsley mixture over them and toss to coat.
Ready to Serve
Sprinkle sesame seeds over the roasted carrots for added crunch and garnish. Remove the ribs from the oven and serve them hot, paired with the flavorful carrots for a complete and satisfying meal.
