Ingredients in Spicy Lemon Fire Wings
Here’s what you need to make Spicy Lemon Fire Wings:
For the Marinade
Chicken wings – Use bone-in, skin-on wings for the juiciest texture and crispy skin when baked. You can also substitute with chicken drumsticks or thighs for a heartier option.
Garlic – Freshly minced garlic brings a strong, savory base to the marinade. Powdered garlic can work in a pinch, but fresh cloves give the best flavor.
Lemon juice – Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for a bright, zesty taste that helps tenderize the chicken. Bottled lemon juice is not recommended as it lacks freshness.
Salt – Draws out moisture and seasons the wings from the inside, ensuring every bite is flavorful.
Olive oil – Helps coat the wings evenly and locks in flavor during marination. Light olive oil or avocado oil are the best choices.
For the Lemon Fire Sauce
Garlic – Coarsely chopped garlic adds a deep, aromatic flavor that blends beautifully into the sauce.
Olive oil – Used to sauté the garlic and form the base of the sauce.
Lemon zest – Intensifies the citrus flavor and adds freshness. Half is cooked into the sauce, and the rest is sprinkled over the wings when serving.
Lemon juice – Provides tangy brightness that balances the sweetness of the honey and the heat of the peppers.
Thai red peppers – Small but fiery, these chilies bring the “fire” element. Adjust the amount depending on your heat preference. For less spice, try red chili flakes or jalapeño slices.
Cayenne powder – Boosts the heat level and adds a subtle smokiness. Reduce or omit for a milder version.
Honey – Creates that irresistible sticky glaze while mellowing the chili heat with natural sweetness. Maple syrup works as a substitute.
Butter (unsalted) – Adds richness and helps emulsify the sauce so it clings perfectly to the wings.
Black pepper – Brings a subtle spice and balances the flavors.
Salt – Adjust to taste at the end, depending on how tangy or sweet you want the sauce.
How to make Spicy Lemon Fire Wings
1. Marinade & Cook
Add all the marinade ingredients to a mixing bowl and mix well. Add the chicken wings and fully coat in the marinade.
Cover the mixing bowl and marinate in the refrigerator for 4-6 hours, or at least 30 minutes.
Bake in the oven at 425°F (220°C) for 20–25 minutes, flipping the wings halfway through, until they reach an internal temperature of 170°F. You can also make these wings on the grill over medium heat, flipping every few minutes for about 15 minutes, or cook them in the air fryer at 425°F for 12–15 minutes.
2. Lemon Fire Suce & Coat
Add the olive oil to a preheated skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and cook until it just begins to brown and become fragrant, then turn the heat to low. Add the lemon juice so that the garlic doesn’t burn and then add all the remaining ingredients, except the Thai peppers.
Mix well and then bring to a low simmer until the sauce begins to thicken (5-10 minutes). Mix in the chili peppers.
Add the cooked chicken wings to the pan and fully coat it with the sauce. Alternatively, the wings can be added to a large bowl and tossed with the sauce. Top with fresh grated lemon zest and chopped parsley.
*NOTE: Thai chili peppers are full of spicy capsaicin which will burn if it contacts sensitive skin. Be careful when handling these peppers and wash your hands thoroughly or wear gloves. Citric acid (lime or lemon juice) can help neutralize the capsaicin.
Ready to Serve
These Oven Baked Lemon Fire Wings come out sticky, spicy, and full of citrus flavor, perfect for game day, parties, or even a weeknight dinner. Serve them hot, garnished with extra lemon zest and fresh chili slices for that fiery finish everyone will love!
