Top 3 Recipe Tips
1. Let the potatoes cool slightly before smashing
After boiling, let the potatoes rest for about 10 minutes. This helps them stay together better and creates crispier edges in the air fryer.
2. Use freshly grated parmesan
Fresh parmesan melts and crisps up much better than the pre-packaged kind. It creates that beautiful golden crust around the potatoes.
3. Don’t overcrowd the air fryer
Leave a little space between the potatoes so the hot air can circulate properly. This helps them become crispy instead of soft.

Ingredients in Crispy Cheesy Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes
What you will need

Potatoes
Use small or medium potatoes with thin skin. Baby potatoes work especially well because they become soft inside while getting crispy outside.
Cheese
A mix of mozzarella and cheddar gives the best texture and flavor. Mozzarella melts beautifully while cheddar adds a rich cheesy taste.
Parmesan
Parmesan helps create that crispy golden crust that makes these potatoes so addictive.
Butter
Melted butter gives the potatoes a rich flavor and helps them crisp up in the air fryer.
Garlic
Fresh garlic adds incredible flavor to the butter mixture and makes the potatoes smell amazing while cooking.
Olive Oil
A small amount of olive oil helps everything crisp evenly and adds extra richness.
Seasonings
Salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder give the potatoes a warm, savory flavor. Smoked paprika works especially well if you want extra depth.
Fresh Parsley
Fresh parsley adds freshness and a little color right before serving.
Tips for the Best Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes
Boil the potatoes until fork tender, but not falling apart.
Smash them gently so they stay mostly together.
Use enough cheese underneath the potatoes to create a crispy cheesy layer.
Brush the potatoes well with garlic butter for maximum flavor.
Cook until deeply golden brown for the best texture. Serve immediately while the cheese is hot and crispy.
How to Make Crispy Cheesy Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes
Start by washing the potatoes well and boiling them whole with the skin on until soft. Once cooked, drain them and let them cool slightly.
While the potatoes cool, prepare the garlic butter by mixing melted butter, olive oil, and freshly minced garlic.

Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheese and parmesan directly into the air fryer basket or tray. This will create a crispy cheesy crust underneath the potatoes.
Place the potatoes on top of the cheese and gently smash them using a glass or spatula. You want them flattened but still thick enough to stay soft inside.

Brush the potatoes generously with the garlic butter mixture, then season with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
Add more cheese and parmesan on top before air frying until everything becomes deeply golden, crispy, and bubbly.
The smell at this point is honestly irresistible.

Ready to Serve
These crispy smashed potatoes are best served hot right out of the air fryer while the cheese is still melty and crispy.
Serve them with:
Greek yogurt dip
garlic sauce
ranch dressing
sour cream
spicy mayo

You can also sprinkle extra parmesan and fresh parsley on top for even more flavor.
They pair perfectly with burgers, grilled chicken, steak, or can simply be enjoyed on their own as a snack.

Variations & Substitutions
Add Bacon
Crispy bacon pieces make these potatoes even more flavorful and extra satisfying.
Make Them Spicy
Add chili flakes or hot sauce for a spicy version.
Try Different Cheeses
Swap cheddar for gouda, provolone, or pepper jack cheese.
Use Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes create a slightly sweeter version that also becomes deliciously crispy.
Add Herbs
Fresh rosemary, thyme, or chives pair beautifully with the garlic butter.
Make Them Lighter
Replace part of the butter with olive oil and serve with Greek yogurt dip instead of heavy sauces.
Add Green Onion
Green onions add freshness and a little crunch on top.
These crispy cheesy potatoes are one of those recipes that disappear fast, so you might want to make an extra batch 😊
Save it for your next busy weeknight, and enjoy a homemade meal that’s both simple and satisfying. 🍜✨
